[PIC] Don't mess with the fire department

Don't mess with the fire department
Found this picture where the fire department thought they wanted to punish a guy who parked illegal in front of a fire hose.
I feel bad for the owner of this car, it can be hard to find parking space, but I bet from now on he will use the time to find a legal parking space.

That's not punishment; it's firemen doing their job. When you park in front of a hydrant, the hose won't get to the fire. That is why it's illegal to park in front of them. If all the moron gets is a couple broken windows and a ticket from the police, then he's lucky. That could be his apartment on fire.

I think it used more hose going through the car, rather than under or over the boot

Darius Taslim sagde ...

I don't think Firehose that big would fit under the car.

If you try to route it on top of the car.. with that water pressure.. the hose might get loose off the fire hydrant.. more disaster.

I think the Firemen are doing what best for them to do their job.

Sorry for the car owner, but he really shouldn't park in front of "emergency" service... (imagine someone blocks your fire exit)

those hoses cant bend very well when they are pressurized.. even over or under the car could prevent the fire fighters from extinguishing as effectively if the car was not there.

plus.. beamers arent what their cracked up to be.. just a name.. -- smash that window.

Gordon McCague sagde ...

They probably did less damage running it through the windows. I also understand that the hose needs to be reasonably level for it to work at optimum capacity.

It's clear that it's punishment!

Timothy Caldwell sagde ...

That's not punishment...the person who parked the car there is an irresponsible selfish prick who chose convenience over the safety of others.

I knew a fireman who often recounted the story of a fire at a school at home-time. Parents had illegally parked on both sides of the main road leading to the school, leaving the path too thin for a fire engine. They happily continued regardless, and chewed up the sides of tends of cars with the wheels of the fire-engine. The parents were then later sent bills for their illegally parked cars, and damage to the firetruck. Hah!

@Matt: If it was over the trunk or car it would crease the hose and build too much pressure

I am a firefighter, and I've seen this picture before on several occasions.

The line show is a 5" or 6" supply line, carrying what is probably somewhere between 30 and 90 PSI -- well over a thousand gallons a minute of water.

The engine company that dropped it probably left enough line to wrap the hydrant and drove off toward the scene, paying out line from the bed as they drove. If you don't take enough off when you first drop the end, you're not going to drag a thousand feet of it closer for more length.

You want that line to be as straight as possible. Its flowing static pressure not being pumped by an engine company sitting at the hydrant.

Once its flowing water, you're not moving it easily. Full, a line like that weighs more than most people can even drag to make small changes in how it is laid out.

Punishment or not, the idiot had it coming to him. If your stupid enough to park in front of a hydrant then you get what you get. What they should have done is gotten 5 firemen together and tipped the car completely over onto its roof. I have no sorrow what-so-ever for anyone that gets n the way of a fire or police man trying t do their job. My opinion: they don't get nearly the respect they deserve, and someone like this is basically spitting in their face.

Kevin Bracken sagde ...

This is common. I have seen lots of pics like this, and they deserve it.

I say they should only give him one or the other - not a ticket and a broken window. The guy was an idiot for parking there, but I think it's over the top to give him both. If the car was Mercedes then I think fine..the guy probably has a high complex and can pay for both..but that car..lol..

anyways..imagine if the guy being rescued from the fire is the owner of that car..lol...

I would think the driver is liable in manyt things, first for parking in a restricted zone (that's what the red curb is about) Second they are responsible for the damage as they were in the way, and third they may be sued by people involved in the fire as a reason that there was added time to respond/damage due to their vehicle obstructing the fire department.

David Villafuerte sagde ...

The owner of the car should sue. Even though he did park in an illegal zone, he can argue the firemen did this on purpose and could have had more hose line and time saved if they had set it up undernearth.

TheSlogger sagde ...

The owner of the car won't get anywhere with a lawsuit. It's been tried. The picture above is absolutely standard procedure. I used to work security and although in my time we never had this happen, (partly due to our quick response to fire lane violators), I did speak on numerous occasions with the local fire department.

Just for having your car there, with no warning at all you can be towed and ticketed. That's without there having been a fire. If there IS a fire and they find your car, they will intentionally run the hose through your car, just to prove a point, even if there was another just as easy way around it. Why will they do this? Because they can. Because they shouldn't have to stop for one second to make considerations for your car being there, you obviously didn't do the same when you parked.

Even if they run the hose through your car when it obviously wasn't necessary, that's too bad. No court is going to question a firefighters judgment with respect to his expertise in hose deployment, especially not when you totally exercised worse judgment in parking.

That's what BMW stands for. "Break my Windows."

Anonym sagde ...

"It's clear that it's punishment!"

What is clear is that the government can regulate under police power. Here, the harm is clear - property may be destroyed and people might die if the hose is not fully extended, allowing the full flow of water to reach the fire.

Unknown sagde ...

And the guy deserves it, 100%

Because he couldn't walk the extra steps to park someplace NOT in front of the hydrant, someone else might have lost their life in a fire.

Pity a picture of this isn't posted above every hydrant as a warning.

osok sagde ...

I had this done to me, ya i was wrong, but SFW.

I came out to see a hose through my brand new corvette, i was pissed.. so i grabbed an axe from trunk and chopped the thing off at the hydrant..

it was amazing.. the hose blewoff like a rocket.. out of my car, and clear so i could make a quik get-away.

it was my way of letting them know that i could dole out the punishment too..

radu sagde ...

@vince: well done, show them how small your dick is ;) and that your small dick is far more important than the people that are dying in the fire. You rule! :D

Lieberher sagde ...

i call bullshit on you Vince, why on earth would you have an axe in the trunk of your corvette? clearly youre a lazy tool already by parking in front of a hydrant so why would you have an axe in your trunk? that would require you to do work. also, chopping the hose would endanger the fire that is being fought and the pressure coming out of that hose would fuck your car up even worse, so nice FAKE story.

GJS sagde ...

We probably could go over the hood, as some have suggested. Under the car would take too much time, and kinking a hose that size greatly reduces water volume and pressure being supplied to our fire engine, which then pumps the water to the firefighters inside the building, who are both putting out the fire and searching for victims. So Vince, I certainly hope that you didn't really do that. Nothing is more dangerous to a firefighter than losing water in the middle of a room that is fully engulfed in fire. Furthermore, nothing is more terrifying to a victim inside a fire than feeling heat so hot they can't breathe. Until you try it, I suggest you understand that this wasn't punishment, it was simply a matter of saving a life. And every time someone parks in front of a hydrant, or in the fire zone in front of the local food store, you're doing the same thing. Our job is difficult enough; we're not asking for your help, just a bit of respect so we can continue to help people like yourself, who are generally ungrateful.
